Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanyang Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Chongwu Festival, Tianzhong Festival, etc., is a folk festival that worship gods and ancestors, pray for blessings and ward off evil spirits with entertainment and eating activities. The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional cultural festival popular in China and other countries of cultural Chinese characters. It is said that Qu Yuan, a poet of Chu State during the Warring States Period, committed suicide by jumping on the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Later generations also regarded the Dragon Boat Festival as a festival to commemorate Qu Yuan.
According to legend, Qu Yuan advocated cultivating talents and empowering the country, enriching the country and strengthening the army, and forcing the alliance to fight against Qin, but was strongly opposed by noble Zilan and others. During his exile period, he wrote poems such as “Li Sao”, “Tian Wen” and “Nine Songs”, which concerned the country and the people. In 278 BC, the Qin army smashed the capital of Chu State. Seeing that his motherland was invaded, Qu Yuan was heartbroken, but he could not bear to abandon his motherland. On May 5th, after writing the masterpiece “Huaisha” , committed suicide by bouldering into the Miluo River and composed a magnificent patriotic movement with his own life. After Qu Yuan was thrown into the river, the local people immediately rowed boats to rescue him,but Qu Yuan’s body was never found again. In order to express condolences, people rowed on the rivers and rivers and then it gradually developed into a dragon boat race. The people were afraid that the fish in the river would eat his body, so they went home and brought rice balls into the river so that the fish and shrimp would not spoil Qu Yuan’s body. Later, it became the custom of eating zongzi. In addition to the customs of dragon boat racing and eating zongzi, there are many customs such as hanging mugwort and drinking realgar wine.
